• Ecology and Taxonomy of Protists, especially of ciliates, in streams and rivers
• Initial colonization of hyporheic interstitial zone and biofilms
• Impact of protists on morphology and function of biofilms
• Impact of flow velocity and turbulence on ciliates
• Riverine ecosystems
• Impact of disturbance events on the protist community in the hyporheic interstitial zone
• Regeneration of disturbed streams
• Multivariate statistical methods to analyse spatial and temporal pattern
